Who:  Military Service members and family, MCBH tenant commands and Civilian Personnel.

What: Denim Day of action and awareness is an event in which people are encouraged to wear denim to combat victim blaming and educate others about sexual violence. The campaign was originally triggered by a ruling by the Italian Supreme Court where a rape conviction was overturned because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans, she must have helped her rapist remove her jeans, thereby implying consent.

When: April 30, 2025

Where: MCBH approved AOR.

Background:  The idea for Denim Day, which is held annually during Sexual Assault Awareness Prevention Month (SAAPM), came from Italian activists as a direct response to a 1992 Italian Supreme Court ruling that held a victim liable for her sexual assault because she was wearing tight jeans when it happened. SAAPM is an annual recognition throughout the Department of Defense since 2004.  Statistics in the FY22 SAPR Annual Report 8,942 service members and civilians experience some level of a sexual assault, and that number increases annually.
