Personalize Your Volunteer Journey

Living in the barracks offers a close-knit environment, but stepping outside your daily routine to volunteer can transform your time on base. Giving back provides a change of scenery, builds new skills, and connects you with the broader military and local communities.

Whether you want to earn recognition, expand your professional network, or recharge your mental well-being, there are several straightforward ways to get involved.

Avenues for Barracks Marines to Get Involved

  • Single Marine Program (SMP): Designed specifically for unaccompanied Marines, the SMP coordinates local service projects, cleanup efforts, and community outreach. It is one of the easiest ways to get out of the barracks, meet peers from other units, and build team camaraderie.
  • Conservation & Environmental Projects: If you enjoy spending time outdoors. Activities include maintaining trails, supporting wildlife habitat projects, and helping with local ecosystem care.
  • Base Community & Youth Support: Volunteer opportunities abound through Marine Corps Community Services (MCCS) programs. You can coach youth sports teams, support family readiness events, or assist with base-wide activities during peak seasons.

The Value of Serving Beyond the Barracks

  • Mental & Physical Well-being: Stepping away from work and barracks life to help others reduces stress, boosts personal happiness, and gives you a fresh perspective.
  • Professional & Career Growth: Volunteering allows you to practice leadership, project management, and specialized skills outside your MOS. These experiences strengthen your resume and expand your professional network.
  • Military Recognition: Your volunteer hours count toward formal military honors. Active-duty service members can earn prestigious awards such as the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal (MOVSM) or the President’s Volunteer Service Award (PVSA).

To get started, check in with your local installation's Volunteer Coordinator or contact your unit's SMP representative to find upcoming events that match your schedule, or checkout the Passport to Volunteering workshop by Marine Corps Family Team Building. It teaches participants how to find local jobs, log hours, and turn volunteer work into resume skills.
